The Path Back to the Flight Deck
What Is the FAA HIMS Program?
HIMS, the Human Intervention Motivation Study, is the FAA’s occupational pathway for pilots with substance use concerns. It exists for one reason: to get pilots treated, monitored, and back in the cockpit safely under a special issuance medical certificate. The pathway is coordinated through a HIMS-trained Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) and typically involves evaluation, quality treatment, and structured monitoring afterward.
The most important thing to know: HIMS is a route back, not a career ending. Thousands of pilots have flown again because they took the first step. Treatment is that step, and the quality and documentation of that treatment matter for everything that follows. Our admissions team coordinates timing and records around the requirements you and your HIMS AME identify, while your clinical work stays private and intensive.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse identifies individualized treatment, matched to each person's specific needs, as a core principle of effective care (NIDA, Principles of Effective Treatment).
The Aviator's Burden
Trained for Command, Carrying It Alone
No profession trains composure like aviation. Hundreds of lives behind you, checklists for everything except what is happening at home and in your head, a schedule that wrecks sleep and family in alternating weeks, and a medical certificate that makes honesty feel dangerous. So the drinking lives in the layover, the problem stays compartmentalized, and the most disciplined people in the sky become the least likely to ask for help.
Luxoria was built for professionals exactly like you. There is no traditional group therapy here, no crowd, and no audience. Sixty hours of one-on-one work in 20 days with senior clinicians gets past the command presence to the person carrying it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Questions Pilots Ask
What is the FAA HIMS program?
HIMS (Human Intervention Motivation Study) is the FAA’s occupational pathway that allows pilots with substance use concerns to be treated, monitored, and ultimately returned to the flight deck under a special issuance medical certificate. The pathway is coordinated through a HIMS-trained Aviation Medical Examiner (AME), and completing quality treatment is one of its core steps.
Can a pilot fly again after rehab?
Many pilots return to flying through the FAA HIMS pathway, which exists precisely for that purpose. The route runs through treatment, evaluation, and ongoing monitoring coordinated with a HIMS AME. Your first step is getting well; our team coordinates documentation and timing around the requirements you and your HIMS AME identify.
Is treatment confidential for pilots?
Your stay at Luxoria is protected by NDA, the property is private, and with five beds there is no crowd. Most of our guests pay privately, so no insurance record is ever created. Your obligations to the FAA and your employer are governed by aviation regulations; questions about reporting belong with your HIMS AME, union representative, or counsel.
How long would I be out of the cockpit for treatment?
The residential stay is 28 days and 27 nights: arrive Sunday, begin Monday, depart on a Friday, with 60 hours of one-on-one therapy inside that window. The broader timeline back to the flight deck depends on the HIMS pathway steps your AME coordinates. Stays extend up to 90 days when more time is right.
Why one-on-one therapy for pilots?
Pilots are trained to project command of every situation, and a group of strangers gets the captain, not the person. Sixty hours of individual therapy in 20 days, with senior clinicians, gets past the checklist discipline to the pressure, the schedule strain, and whatever the substance was quieting.
Do you accept insurance?
Most of our guests choose to pay privately, without insurance, to remain fully discreet, and we do accept some out-of-network insurance policies upon request. The investment reflects a 3-to-1 staff-to-guest ratio, five private beds, and 60 hours of dedicated one-on-one therapy. Both options are discussed openly in your confidential first call.
